MEF enhances operations with new AutoStore solution from Swisslog

23. April 2025

MEF, a partner of Würth Electrical Wholesale WEG, is set to revolutionize its warehouse operations with the implementation of an AutoStore system from Swisslog. This strategic move aims to enhance stock density, increase operability, and improve order preparation performance, ensuring high-quality omnichannel service for over 30,000 items in stock.

Founded in 1968, MEF has grown significantly, establishing various sales points across central and northern Italy. In 2015 the new central distribution center in Campi Bisenzio was inaugurated, where the AutoStore system will be implemented. In the same year, MEF became part of the W.E.G. Italia group, owned by Würth Electrical Wholesales.

After migrating to SAP, MEF initiated its automation journey with its cable cut warehouse. Subsequently, the company sought to implement warehouse automation for light goods. Initially, MEF considered different technologies, however, after highlighting the benefits of the AutoStore system, including its reliability, modularity, and ability to fit within the existing space, the cube-based solution proved more competitive.

“We are proud to have been chosen by MEF for this important step towards automation. Swisslog is becoming a benchmark for companies that rely on AutoStore technology in the electrical wholesales sector, and this important partnership with MEF marks the beginning of a strong collaboration with all the companies belonging to the W.E.G. Italia group,” commented Markus Kirchhoff, Swisslog Head of AutoStore EMEA.

The AutoStore system includes a grid with 37,830 bins across 16 levels, 36 robots with 27 battery chargers, 8 outbound carousel ports, and 2 inbound cluster port frames. The structure comprises standard graphic for cladding, 2 maintenance mezzanines, and aseismic towers. SynQ software will interface with the existing WMS and include Router traffic manager. The system’s maximum hourly handling capacity is 1,100 bin presentations per hour for picking and 60 bin presentations per hour for put away, operating in two 8-hour shifts.

"We are excited about the improvements the AutoStore system will bring to our service experience," said Marco ContiLogistics Manager at MEF. "We selected Swisslog based on their strong commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. This aligns with the values of MEF and the W.E.G. Italia group."

The order was acquired in December 2024, with completion expected in November 2025.
