Hub for cutting-edge technology: Swisslog opens new location in Dortmund

After thirty years in Dortmund's Technology Park, the German subsidiary of Swiss intralogistics expert Swisslog is now moving into a state-of-the-art new building in the Dorstfeld district of the city: a sign of expansion and future orientation as well as a commitment to the Ruhr metropolis and Germany as a business location.

Dortmund, 21 April 2021 – Intralogistics provider Swisslog officially opened its new location on Ezzestraße in Dortmund-Dorstfeld on April 20. "We are incredibly pleased to now be able to develop even better than before in a state-of-the-art, spacious new building with all the technical possibilities," says Swisslog CEO Dr. Christian Baur, emphasizing, "The move is a sign of our growth, a future signal to our business partners and employees that we want to expand our leading position in the logistics market even further, and once again a commitment to Dortmund as a location in Germany."

Software hub and Technology Center

Headquartered in Buchs, Switzerland, the company has been based in the Ruhr metropolis since the early 1990s, most recently in the Technology Park on Martin-Schmeißer-Weg and has grown steadily ever since. The expert for automated storage technology, robotics and intelligent software maintains its hub for software development and a technology center in Dortmund, in addition to the administrative headquarters of its German subsidiary, Swisslog GmbH. This is where prototyping and the further development of innovative, data-driven, and robot-assisted intralogistics technologies take place.

"We are looking to the future"

"Cutting-edge technology is the be-all and end-all for us," emphasizes Baur, "with its help we design warehouse processes for our customers that are very efficient, sustainable and fit for the future." The new hub is intended to optimize this process even further, as well as to be a think tank and center of attraction for first-class qualified, highly committed and thoroughly visionary employees. "We are looking to the future and not only working on our very own intralogistics technologies," says CEO Baur, describing his company's aspirations, "we are also focusing on higher-level concepts such as artificial intelligence or the smart city logistics of the future."

Swisslog customers such as Nestlé, Coca-Cola, dm-drogerie markt, Rewe and Roche, to name just a few, reward the company's quality and innovative spirit in the form of a loyal and long-standing partnership.

Symbolic start for all employees

Due to the coronavirus crisis, there was no big opening ceremony on April 20. Instead, the three German GmbH managing directors - Gerd Jennissen, Heinz Ennen and Jens Schmale - started the operation of the new company building symbolically: for approximately 250 employees, who will move in gradually and in small groups for safety reasons. "This will give colleagues the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new premises in peace and at a distance," affirms Jennissen, "and if the situation allows, we'll catch up with a joint event for the inauguration in the summer." Swisslog is a tenant in the building complex on Ezzestraße, which was built by Goldbeck West GmbH, Bochum, and is owned by Jaeger Immobilien GmbH & Co. KG, Dortmund.
