Zhangjiagang No.1 People's Hospital
China is making excellent progress in its efforts to set up a modern Western-style healthcare system. In the city of Zhangjiagang, which lies some 170 km away from Shanghai on the banks of the Yangtze River, in the affluent and densely-populated province of Jiangsu, the foundation was laid in 2003 for a completely new hospital: Zhangjiagang No. 1 People's Hospital. The state-owned hospital has 16 stories and more than 800 patient beds.

The Challenge

Zhangjiagang No. 1 People's Hospital installs UniCar track vehicle system To meet high-quality standards, Chinese hospitals are paying increased attention to the optimization of logistics workflows. The management of Zhangjiagang Hospital was looking for an efficient and reliable solution for the ad-hoc transport of materials. The defined volume and weight

criteria of the items to be transported ruled out the use of pneumatic tube systems. They were in search of a system capable of moving larger and heavier materials, but without compromising the spontaneity of the transported items.

"Swisslog's innovative approach perfectly met our specific logistics needs."
Dr. Zhu Xian, Director Zhangjiagang No.1 People's Hospital

The Solution

In January 2006 Swisslog was awarded the contract to install a UniCar track vehicle system. Altogether, 860 meters of track and 32 switches were installed. Currently, 50 standard containers on the Telelift UniCar system convey a variety of materials including blood samples, sterilized items, and drugs, throughout a total of 32 stations. This order has proven that China has a demand for Swisslog's innovative in-house hospital solutions in transport logistics. The Zhangjiagang Hospital project serves as a model for the burgeoning Chinese healthcare market.
