The faculty of medicine at the University of Leipzig is one of the largest in eastern Germany. Its history goes back to the early 15th century. Since 1999, the faculty contains 29 clinics, 3 independent departments and 3 clinical institutes - all integrated in the same public legal entitiy. Based on these new structures, the University of Leipzig decided to centralize several functions and organizational units of the surgery clinics in a new building called OKL.

The Challenge

University of Leipzig Hospital installs TransCar automatic guided vehicle system The hospital of the University of Leipzig was gradually optimizing the logistic processes of the 35 formerly independent clinics. Uncommon and innovative concepts have always been supported by the hospital management. Further, they needed to address optimization of in-house

transport logistics such as the transport of linen, food, and medical goods.

Requirements:

  • Internal logistics cost reduction
  • Daily transport trips of approximately 67 km
  • High-traffic in the OKL of approximately 322 loads per day to 20 wards, operation area, centralized sterilization, and the distribution center

The Solution

During the planning stages, the transport processes including the flow of commodity and trip quantities were closely analyzed. The findings were that the TransCar automatic guided vehicle (AGV) system would optimize and shorten transport processes with the ability for last-minute transports. The necessity for the storage of goods would also be minimized.

Strategy:

  • Evaluation of number of vehicles needed (6 vehicles)
  • Determine quantity of carts/containers needed for buffer sites (35)

The Results

Most all manual transport of containers was replaced by the TransCar AGV. This resulted in a significant decrease in man hours for manual material transport. Up to 322 carts weighing up to 400 kg each are transported by 6 AGV vehicles daily.

The AGV regularly delivers goods between 6am and 8pm through centralized sterilization, the distribution center, the operation area, and 20 wards. These departments are located between 6 different floors. Today, the average transport trip distance is approximately 67 km.
