After 177 years the Library of the Humboldt-University Berlin receives a separate library building on the campus site: the Jacob-and-Wilhelm-Grimm-Center. By integration of twelve library branches (humanities, culture and social sciences) the University created a new library at the same time. The library serves also as information and communication center on the campus. On seven different floors the user will not only find more than two million volumes of books, but also service facilities of the University Library.
The system: Automated book transport at Humboldt-University
The Jacob-and-Wilhelm-Grimm-Center of the Humboldt-University Berlin is equipped with the Swisslog-Telelift MultiLift book conveyor system, consisting of two fully automated vertical book lifts. MultiLift takes over all vertical transports of books and media between the levels of the library building - quick and gentle. This solution combines the main storage area with all smaller areas within the different departments. The entire system has a total of 23 sending and receiving stations.
The fully integrated system is also equipped with two book return stations, combined with a sorting system, which distributes the media on eight floors. The books are automatically supplied in containers, pre-sorted and transported to the different areas of the library.
The aim was to provide an independent fully automated book return system including transportation that allows a quick transportation of the media back to its respective storage area. In addition, pre-ordered books are sorted directly into appropriate containers, so the book is available for the next user without a long waiting time. This offers a better service and relieves the library staff from manual transport tasks.
Benefits of this solution:
- Faster and more gentle transport of all media (books, newspapers, etc.)
- Efficiency due to automated transports
- Relief of staff from manual transports and long distances
- More service for users and time saving processes
- Vertical and horizontal routing for optimal space utilization
