Augusta-Kranken-Anstalt (AKA) is an evangelic ltd. company hospital lead by the evangelic parish Bochum. Today, the AKA has more than 1,000 employees, 614 beds, and supplies 16,000 inpatients and 20,000 outpatiens in 13 specialized departments.
The Challenge
System Requirements:
- Cost reduction in internal logistics processes
- Daily cart route of approximately 112 km
- High traffic system of approximately 358 transactions per day to 16 wards, surgery area and centralized sterilization
The Solution
In search of cost-saving potential in the hospital, AKA focused on materials management and logistics processes. AKA began introducing innovative concepts to optimize the processes for the transport of linen, foods and medical goods.
An intensive analysis of material flow and transaction quantities throughout the hospital was done with participation from hospital staff, material administration, consultling and services. The TransCar automatic guided vehicle (AGV) system was determined to be the best solution for AKA's logisic needs. TransCar is a highly flexible, easy to use system that allows route changes done simply by software with the use of free navigation technology.
Strategy:
- Determine number of vehicles needed for existing traffic (10 vehicles)
- Site location for container/cart buffer
- Minimal obstruction/burden in foot traffic areas
The Results
AKA's positive experience with the current AGV system, recently resulted in a contract to refit and replace the existing AGV system with the newest generation TransCar LTC2. The expansion was split into 2 stages. The first stage covered the food and sterile goods processes, and the second stage commissioned linen and waste transport.
